Bogd Khan Uul National Park
The mountain looming over Ulaanbaatar to the south is the first protected mountain in the world, since 1778.
This adventure will take you to the famous Orkhon Valley National Park in Central Mongolia, known for its vast steppes and rich grasslands—perfect for long gallops while witnessing animals peacefully grazing near nomadic gers. The region has preserved its nomadic traditions and archaeological sites for centuries, earning its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. You’ll also spend two days fully immersed in the 8 Lakes Protected Area, where pack yaks or horses will carry your gear. This remote area, free from human activity, offers the chance to explore diverse flora and fauna in a peaceful setting. Each night, you’ll camp near the lakes, enjoying the serene atmosphere and clear night skies.
Along the way, you’ll meet locals and have the chance to share a warm milk tea and dried cheese with them. The route is gentle, consisting of open steppes and small hills, allowing plenty of opportunities for galloping. You’ll ride about 35 to 40 km per day. With a logistic vehicle carrying camping equipment and a cook, you’ll enjoy comfortable nights under the stars in this breathtaking valley.
Comfort Level:
Basic - Tourists live in tents, campsites or huts. There are no facilities or they are outdoors (with basic foods on the horse trek).

Challenging level - Does not require special skills, but tourists must be physically fit: expeditions, long rafting, etc.

After breakfast, leave Stepperiders and drive towards Central Mongolia. Your destination is Kara Khorum, the ancient capital of Chinggis Khan. Arrive and settle into your Ger camp for the night.
In the morning, you will visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of Mongolia's most important Buddhist sites. Afterward, drive to Orkhon Valley, stopping at the national park's entrance for a breathtaking view of the Orkhon River and the surrounding valley. Next, head to a nomadic family, where you will meet the herders who will provide the horses for your trek. Spend the afternoon with the family, learning about their traditional way of life—herding, milking animals, and preparing food. Feel free to try these activities if you'd like! You will spend the night camping in a tent near the nomadic family.
After breakfast, you’ll begin your horse trek through the protected area, accompanied by pack yaks or horses to carry your gear, as vehicles are not allowed beyond this point. follow the river until you reach its famous waterfall called Ulaan Tsutgalan, Orkhon Waterfall. Then ride to Shireet Lake, the largest lake in the area, where you’ll experience complete immersion in nature. This untouched landscape is home to beautiful flora and wildlife. At the end of the day, camp by Buureg for a peaceful night under the stars in your tent.
Continue your journey deeper into the protected area, exploring more beautiful lakes along the way. You might encounter nomadic families and have the opportunity to stop and greet them, sharing a warm cup of milk tea in their ger. At the end of the day, you’ll camp in your tent, surrounded by the tranquility of nature.
On your final day of horse riding, enjoy one last gallop across the stunning steppe. Ride towards the Hot Springs, known for their natural healing properties. If you're interested, let your guide know, and be sure to bring appropriate bath clothing to relax in the warm waters. Afterward, head to your camping site for a delicious dinner and a peaceful night under the stars in your tent.
After breakfast, drive to Tovkhon Monastery, small buddhist monastery located on top of a forested mountain. The view from there is beautiful! You will be able to walk around and see caves in which monks have meditated for years! It is not possible to reach the monastery with a car so you will see many people going there by hiking. If you're interested, take a hike up to the monastery, enjoying the scenic views along the way. After lunch at the monastery, continue your journey to the Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes, often called the Mini Gobi. End the day by spending the night in a comfortable Ger.
After breakfast, take some time to explore the mini Gobi – a stunning blend of steppe and sand dunes. You’ll then enjoy a short camel ride through the dunes for a truly unique experience. Afterward, continue your journey to Stepperiders Camp, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the night in a comfortable Ger.
